HYDRO MICRODERMABRASION

Daily

• Avoid excessive sun exposure and tanning at least one week before your session.

• Stop using retinoids or harsh exfoliants 3–5 days prior to treatment.

• Keep your skin clean and free from heavy products on the day of your appointment.

4 Weeks Prior

• Avoid filler injections in the treatment area, as the pressure and movement used during microdermabrasion may cause filler displacement.

• Avoid tanning and incidental sun exposure, including tanning beds/booths, as this will increase skin sensitivity, heat retention, and destructive free radical damage in the skin, leading to adverse reactions and disruption in the healing process. 

• Prepare skin that is prone to PIH with a suitable skincare product that contains an effective dose of a non-sensitising Tyrosinase inhibitor.  Ensure barrier function optimisation with moisturisers and serums rich in ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and calming ingredients.

• Antiwrinkle injections (Botox / Dysport) in the treatment area should be avoided as it will lead to disruption of results. The pressure and movement used during microdermabrasion may cause the movement of the anti-wrinkle injection to other muscles in the surrounding treatment area.

2 Weeks Prior​

• Avoid using fake tan and gradual tanning creams in the area to be treated as the dihydroxyacetone can cause dehydration and sensitivity in some skins. The colouring can also stain your microdermabrasion tubing & tips. The skin in the treated area can also look streaky as a result of the microdermabrasion treatment.

• Avoid waxing, plucking, threading, IPL and Laser in the treatment area as these treatments affect the barrier function and or are associated with inflammation. When combined with microdermabrasion they increase the potential for an adverse reaction.

• Avoid photosensitising medications as these also increase skin sensitivity and potentially lead to an adverse reaction.

• Avoid prescription-strength exfoliant creams, chemical peels, dermaplaning as this will result in over exfoliation of the treated area and potentially cause an adverse reaction.

1 Week Prior​

• Clients should avoid using Benzyl Peroxide which is a common ingredient in acne treatments, due to its decongesting & antibacterial properties. However, it can also cause skin dryness, redness, and irritation. Applying Benzyl Peroxide prior to a microdermabrasion treatment can further aggravate the skin and potentially result in excessive redness, irritation, or even damage to the skin during the treatment. 

• If prone to cold sores, please ask your client to speak to their pharmacist about a prophylactic course of antiviral medication prior to the microdermabrasion treatment. This will minimise the risk of a cold sore outbreak that can be associated with microdermabrasion and ensures a more comfortable and successful treatment experience. 

3 Days Prior​

It is recommended to avoid active skincare ingredients such as Vitamin A (retinoids) and Vitamin C prior to a microdermabrasion treatment and here's why:

1. Increased Skin Sensitivity: Vitamin A derivatives, commonly known as retinoids (including retinol and tretinoin), are potent active ingredients that enhance skin cell turnover. However, they can also increase skin sensitivity, making your skin more susceptible to irritation and potential side effects during and after a microdermabrasion treatment.

2. Risk of Irritation:  When combined with the use of active ingredients such as vitamin C there is a higher chance of experiencing skin redness & irritation. This can lead to discomfort and compromise the healing process after the treatment.

Avoid exfoliating agents ​

Including AHA’s, BHA’s, enzymes or granular exfoliating products. These ingredients are involved in the skin cell renewal process and will reduce the thickness of the stratum corneum prior to performing the microdermabrasion, which can also potentially cause an adverse reaction.

• Apply a gentle, hydrating moisturiser and sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

• Avoid makeup for at least 24 hours to allow your skin to breathe.

• Refrain from using active skincare ingredients like AHAs, BHAs, or retinoids for 48 hours post-treatment.

• Stay hydrated and protect your skin from excessive sun exposure.

• Use a gentle cleanser and avoid harsh scrubs for the next 3–5 days.
